Author Beth Grayson allows readers a first-hand glimpse into prison life and the women who end up there
No day is ever the same, when working as a corrections facility nurse. Based on her real-life observations, author and nurse Beth Grayson provides readers an inside look behind the prison walls, to share shocking revelations and insight into prisoners’ lives in her new book, “Nurses Behind Bars: You Can’t Make This Stuff Up.”
In the book, readers unveil the unimaginable events, behaviors, and relationships occurring in a maximum security, all-female prison. In honor of inspiring Grayson, each chapter is named after each inmate, whose compelling stories are shared.
“I wanted to share these women’s stories as an opportunity to highlight female prisoners and the wild stories they shared,” Grayson said. “Just like us, they have a story to tell, and their paths to prison weren’t as black and white as one would imagine.”
Although many of these women found it difficult to discuss their backgrounds, private and consensual interviews revealed recantations of violence, abuse, and drug addictions these women endured as young girls, ultimately leading to their lives behind bars.
“This book discusses the great power of drug addiction and mistreatment and how it leads these women down a hopeless and dangerous path of crime and murder,” Grayson said.
Grayson hopes to bring awareness of the everyday occurrences, that can lead to a loss of control over one’s life and the repercussions that result. She encourages her readers to humanize female prisoners, to acknowledge and avoid these tragedies in their own lives.

Beth Grayson is a Registered Nurse with over 40 years in the medical field and 14 years of experience in prison nursing. She specialized in corrections and was the first Certified Correctional Nurse in the United States by the American Correctional Association. One year later, she achieved certification as a Certified Correctional Nurse Manager. After many years of practicing as an RN in all fields of medicine, she found correctional was her favorite and strongest passion.
