A.N. Caudle's Dark Romantasy Debut 'Worthy of Fate' Launches with Penguin Random House

A.N. Caudle never set out to become an author. When she self-published her first novel, she would have been thrilled if just a dozen strangers read it. Now, her dark fantasy romance is hitting bookstore shelves across the country through a traditional publishing deal with ACE, an imprint of Penguin Random House.

"Now it's going to be in stores all over. Everywhere," Caudle said. "It's been awe-inspiring, it really has, that this has become so beloved by everyone that it became popular enough to get picked up."

Her debut novel, Worthy of Fate, launches May 12 as the first book in the Realms in Peril trilogy. The story follows Kya, a young woman marked by the Gods who must compete in a Trial to prove herself Worthy. A deadly plague threatens to consume the realm, and if Kya succeeds, she might gain the power to stop it.

Meanwhile, Ryker waits in the shadows for his fated mate. He feels an undeniable pull toward Kya, but dark forces make their union dangerous. He must choose between his heart and his Nation's safety.

From Reader to Writer in Three Months

Caudle discovered her passion for reading in 2022 when a friend recommended a fantasy romance. She devoured the genre, gravitating toward darker themes and complex emotional territory.

"I liked the unhinged side of things, and I really enjoyed the darker, heavier topics," Caudle explained. "We need a way to be able to process these kinds of things, and that's one thing that books can give us an outlet to do."

In 2023, a story idea took hold and wouldn't let go. She decided to write it down just to clear her head. Three months later, she had completed Worthy of Fate.

Dark Fantasy, Not Dark Romance

Caudle draws a clear distinction between her work and the dark romance subgenre. Dark romance typically features problematic dynamics between romantic partners, while dark fantasy with romance places the darkness in the world itself.

"For Worthy of Fate, it is a dark world, so there are terrible, horrible things happening in the world, and Kaya and Riker have to figure out a way to try to stop these horrible things from happening," she said.

The romance between Kya and Ryker is forbidden rather than toxic. Divine forces draw them together while circumstances force them apart, creating tension without antagonism between the lovers.

"I love forbidden romance because of the tension that it creates, and I didn't want them to be enemies," Caudle said. "That's something that we find a lot in novels, and I love it just as much as the next girl, don't get me wrong, I really do. But I wanted something just a little bit different."

The Golden Retriever Book Boyfriend

Ryker embodies what Caudle calls a "golden retriever" book boyfriend—loyal, devoted, and genuinely good-hearted. The appeal lies not in overcoming conflict between the romantic leads, but in watching them navigate external forces that threaten to keep them apart.

The story also offers readers a cathartic experience. Kya fights back against injustice and danger in ways readers might wish they could in their own lives.

"We can't battle these types of things in our world, I think topics that are so much bigger than us, but in the book... You finally are able to do that," Caudle said.

A Trilogy in Motion

Worthy of Fate ends on a cliffhanger that Caudle acknowledges might require therapy to process. "Your therapy bills for the cliffhanger can be sent to my DMs," she joked.

Readers won't wait long for resolution. Bound by Fate, the second book, is already available on Kindle Unlimited and will receive a traditional release from ACE in September. The final installment, Master of Fate, will complete Kya and Ryker's story, though Caudle hints the world itself may continue beyond this trilogy.

"I'm not going to say it's the end to this world, but it is the end to Kya and Riker's story," she said. "I'm excited, but I'm also very sad, because it's going to end."

From Indie to Hybrid Author

Caudle's journey from independent author to hybrid author—someone who publishes both independently and traditionally—reflects the changing landscape of publishing. Her 22,500 social media followers helped build the audience that caught a traditional publisher's attention.

She plans to visit a bookstore first thing on release day to see her book on the shelf. For readers, she hopes the series provides exactly what she sought when she first discovered fantasy romance: an escape.

"I really, really hope that they find an escape," Caudle said. "Any amount of escape that they're looking for. They find enjoyment. Maybe they find something relatable to Kya or to Riker, and they have fun. This is something to have fun with, and so I just really hope that they enjoy it."

Caudle also released an independently published book just 18 days before Worthy of Fate, available on Kindle Unlimited for readers who want more of her writing.

Worthy of Fate by A.N. Caudle releases May 12 from ACE, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
